Edmond Gallant was born March 8, 1947 in New Brunswick, where he grew up just outside Moncton. His family was both English and French, so Edmond and his five siblings grew up in a bilingual environment. His father was unable to serve in World War two because of a medical condition, but he did work in the mines during the war years – a different kind of service. Edmond grew up near St. Philip where he attended school up to Grade 8 – he left school when his father became sick, and he worked on the family farm. When he turned 18 his mother told him it was time to get a job, and Edmond chose to enlist in the Canadian military. He initially joined the Black Watch and later transferred to the Royal Canadian Regiment. While he spent most of his career in Gagetown, he served overseas on several occasions, notably on a NATO mission in West Germany and on four UN peacekeeping operations in Cyprus. Along the way Edmond rose through the ranks on his way to becoming a Warrant Officer during Canada’s “Golden Age of Foreign Policy”. He also married and remains an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion. Edmond Gallant was interviewed by Scott Masters at his home in Ajax, Ontario in June 2025.
