Cameron, Ken

Ken Cameron was born March 24, 1934 in Lumsden, Saskatchewan.  He grew up against the backdrop of WW2 and the postwar period  in different parts of Saskatchewan, from farming areas to the north of the province.  Ken finished his schooling after Grade 10, at which time he worked different jobs, including stints at HBC and the CNR.  All the while he listened to war stories from family and co-workers, and he made the decision to enlist himself, and he was selected for the Royal Canadian Electrical Mechanical Engineers (RCEME).  Training for that took place in Kingston, after which he was based as a craftsman in Shilo, Manitoba for 5 years.  Posts in Churchill, Manitoba and 202 Workshop in Montreal followed, all while the Cold War was escalating.  Ken had an overseas posting to Germany, where he served as part of the NATO contingent.  During this same time Ken married Jean, and the two of them would be together for 68 years; their family began to grow as well, and by the time Ken was assigned to Germany they already had three daughters. Calgary would be the next posting, followed by Ottawa and a promotion to sergeant.   That took place in 1968 – the year the armed forces were amalgamated –  and Ken found himself in the air force.  Ken had to adapt his skills to the requirements of the new job, and he found creative ways to repair the planes in his care.  That would be the final phase of Ken’s 32 years of military service as he was nearing retirement age.  He and Jean chose Bobcaygeon, Ontario as their destination, and they both became very active in that community, with Ken involved in the Legion and the Poppy campaigns; he was in fact interviewed at that Legion by Scott Masters in March 2025.
