Butch Carter was born June 11, 1958 in Springfield, Ohio. The oldest of seven children, he later moved to Middletown, Ohio where he would graduate from high school. Butch was a gifted student and athlete from a young age, but he was a standout sports star in high school, where he was named Ohio’s 1976 High School Player of the Year. Additionally he was a high school All-American basketball selection as a senior and a second-team all-state high school football selection as a junior. He was invited to play in the first McDonald’s All-American Basketball Game in 1976, and he attended the University of Indiana, where he played under Bobby Knight and studied in the Kelley School of Business. In February 2025 Coach Carter very kindly sat down with Crestwood students, participating in our Oral History Project. He answered questions about his life and family, sharing the genealogy of the slave ancestors he has uncovered and answering questions about the racial and cultural context of his own lifetime, both before and after basketball. He also commented on the many sports-related issues confronting Crestwood’s own student-athletes as they get ready to take their next steps. We thank Coach Carter for his time and candour!
