Allergy Alert

Crestwood School is a nut-free environment. As some of you may be aware, there are children in our school who are allergic to peanuts, pine nuts, tree nuts, and other kinds of nuts. This allergy can cause an anaphylactic reaction – meaning the airway can close up and cause breathing to stop. Given that we have children in our care with this condition, we all need to be extremely diligent about our habits and the foods we bring into the school.

If your child has peanut butter or any other nuts for breakfast, please make sure they brush their teeth and wash their hands before going to school.

The purpose of this letter is to clarify the rules about sending food to our school that must be followed. When it is your child’s turn to celebrate a birthday or you are helping organize a class party, you must adhere to these rules. Otherwise, the food you bring in WILL NOT BE SERVED! Please keep in mind that even a very small trace amount of peanuts or nuts can cause an anaphylactic reaction.

NO FOOD PREPARED AT HOME WILL BE SERVED. We cannot monitor how food is prepared in each individual’s home. If your home is not nut-free, there could be contamination with trace amounts of nuts.

Only baked goods from GUARANTEED NUT-FREE BAKERIES are allowed (see list below). Baked goods from bakeries at stores such as Loblaws, Metro Or Tim Horton’s are NOT acceptable since these bakeries have products that · contain nuts – even if the baked goods you purchase do not have nuts, there could be cross-contamination.          ·

Only pre-packaged food that do not contain nuts, peanuts, plant protein or soy will be served. Please read the listed ingredients thoroughly and scan the rest of the packaging for warning that there may be traces of nuts, peanuts or tree nuts.

Companies change their manufacturing facilities often, so a product that you may assume is nut-free may no longer be. You will need to always read the ingredients when you buy them. It is best to purchase food from major companies such as Nestle, Kellogg’s, etc. because they will be more diligent about posting nut and peanut warnings. Please send food to school in the original packaging.

Certain products that are likely peanut and nut- free are:

Crackers – Goldfish, Cheese Nips, Premium Plus

Cheese – Loblaws (No Name), Black Diamond, Cracker Barrel & Kraft

Yogurts – Neilson’s, Astra, Yoplait, Olympic & logo

Candy Bars – Nestle produces four chocolates that are guaranteed peanut and nut free which are the originals of Kit-Kat, Aero, Smarties and Coffee Crisp. Newer varieties of these candy bars (such as Kit-Kat Orange or Smarties in white chocolate) may not be peanut and nut-free.

Potato Chips – Lays, Hostess, and Humpty Dumpty

Ice Cream – Chapman’s produces some products that are labeled peanut and nut free (but some of their products do contain traces of peanuts and nut warnings).

Cookies – Dare produces some products that are labeled peanut and nut-free

Certain products that contain nuts or traces of nuts and peanuts so you should not bring these products to school are:

  • Most candy bars (except the ones listed above)
  • Most ice creams and popsicles (except the ones listed above)
  • Lots of crackers have traces of nuts such as Ritz Cheese Sandwiches
  • Lots of cookies have traces of nuts such as President’s Choice products

Please remember if any product sent to the school is not peanut and nut-free, we will NOT serve it to the class.

Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.
