November 30th, 2023Crestwood’s Accessibility Standards – for Customer Service
November 30th, 20231. PURPOSE
The purpose of this Policy is to outline the practices and procedures of Crestwood Preparatory College and School (the “School”) to meet its obligations under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (the “AODA”) and, specifically, the Customer Service Standards. Through this Policy, the School establishes and implements practices and procedures consistent with its goal of compliance with the AODA and its commitment to excellent customer service experience for all.
2. POLICY
Guiding Principles and Scope
The School is committed to the principles and goals of the AODA and the Customer Service Standards set out in the Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation (“Customer Service Standards”). The School is committed to providing excellent customer service. It will make every reasonable effort to ensure that its policies, practices, and procedures are consistent with the principles of dignity, independence, integration, and equal opportunity for persons with disabilities by:
- Ensuring that the School’s goods, services, and facilities are provided in a manner that respects the dignity and independence of persons with disabilities;
- Ensuring the provision of the School School’s goods, services, and facilities to persons with disabilities and others are integrated to the extent possible, unless an alternate measure is necessary, whether temporarily or on a permanent basis, to enable a person with a disability to obtain, use or benefit from the goods, services and facilities;
- Using alternative methods when possible to ensure persons with disabilities are given an opportunity equal to that given to others to obtain, use or benefit from the School’s goods, services and facilities;
- Taking into account individual accommodation needs when brought to the School’s attention when providing goods and services; and
- Communicating with persons with disabilities in a manner that takes into account their disabilities.
The School encourages open two-way communication to ensure the best possible customer service. It expects and encourages persons with disabilities to communicate their need for accommodation or assistance and work with the School to develop accommodations up to the point of undue hardship..
3. PROCEDURES
Communication
The School is committed to communicating with persons with disabilities in ways that take into account the person’s disability. The School will work with persons with disabilities to provide alternative communication formats that will meet their needs, to provide information to customers in an alternative format that will meet their needs in a timely manner. Customers requesting alternative formats will receive a response within 5 to 10 business days and will be resolved in a timely manner. If telephone or other used forms of communication are not suitable for a customer’s needs, alternative forms of communication will be provided, to the extent required by law.
Assistive Devices
Persons with disabilities may use their own personal assistive devices, service animals (as defined by the Customer Service Standards and below in this Policy) or be accompanied by support persons (as defined by the Customer Service Standards and below in this Policy) while obtaining any service provided by the School. Service animals are permitted on the parts of our premises that are open to the public unless excluded by law.
Support Persons
The School may require a person with a disability to be accompanied by a support person, but only if, after consulting with the person with a disability and considering the available information, the School determines that the support person is necessary to protect the health and safety of the person with the disability or of others on the premises and there is no other reasonable way to protect the health or safety of the person with the disability or others on the premises.
Billing
The School is committed to providing accessible invoices. For this reason, invoices will be provided in alternative formats, upon request.
Guide Dogs and Service Animals
A student/employee/visitor with a disability who is accompanied by a guide dog or service animal will be allowed access to premises that are open to them unless otherwise excluded by law. “No pet” policies do not apply to guide dogs or service animals. Employees may respectfully ask if an animal is a service animal and will not ask the nature of the person’s disability or purpose of the animal.
- Exclusion Guidelines
-
- If a customer’s guide dog or service animal is excluded by law (see applicable laws below), the School will offer reasonable alternative methods to enable the person with a disability to access goods and services, when possible.
- Applicable Laws
-
- Dog Owners’ Liability Act, 2005: If there is a conflict between a provision of this legislation or of a regulation under this or any other act relating to banned breeds (such as pit bulls) and a provision of a by-law passed by a municipality relating to these breeds, the provision that is more restrictive in relation to controls or bans on these breeds prevails. Employees will respectfully explain that the service animal must be removed from the public area due to a municipal by-law and make alternate arrangements or provide the service outside the public area.
- Recognizing a Guide Dog or Service Animal
-
- If it is not readily apparent that the animal is being used by the customer for reasons relating to their disability, the School may request verification.
- Care and Control of the Animal
-
- The individual who is accompanied by a guide dog or service animal is responsible for maintaining care and control of the animal at all times.
- Allergies and Other Health and Safety Concerns
-
- If a health and safety concern presents itself, for example, in the form of a severe allergy to the animal, the School will make all reasonable efforts to meet the needs of all individuals. Pursuant to the School’s obligations under the Human Rights Code and the Occupational Health and Safety Act, each individual’s accommodation needs will be considered on a case-by-case basis, up to the point of undue hardship.
- Due diligence needs to be paid to address health and safety requirements. In very exceptional circumstances where a service animal becomes out of control, causing a clear disruption or a threat to the health and safety of others, and the animal’s behaviour is not corrected by the owner, a person with a disability can be asked to remove their service animal from the premises.
- As a courtesy, particularly if the person and service animal have been in attendance on the premises for a long time, employees may ask whether the animal requires water, may designate an area in which the service animal can relieve itself, or ask whether the staff can be of assistance pertaining to the service animal.
Training
The School will ensure that the following persons receive training about the provision of goods, services, and facilities to persons with disabilities: all of the School’s employees and volunteers, every other person who deals with members of the public or other third parties on behalf of the School and every person who participates in developing the School’s policies, practices and procedures governing the provision of goods, services or facilities to members of the public or other third parties including contractors. Training will be provided to School employees as part of onboarding and will be mandatory. Continuing training and learning will also be provided on an ongoing basis in connection with changes to the policies and procedures governing the provision of goods and services to persons with disabilities.
The training will include instruction on:
- The purposes of the AODA and the requirements of the Customer Service Standards;
- How to interact and communicate with people with various types of disabilities;
- How to interact with persons with disabilities who use an assistive device or the assistance of a guide dog or other service animal or the assistance of a support person;
- How to use equipment or devices available on the school premises or otherwise provided by the School that may help with the provision of the School’s goods or services to a person with a disability;
- What to do if a person with a particular type of disability is having difficulty accessing the School’s goods, services, or facilities, inclusive of digital assets; and
- The School’s current policies, practices, and procedures relating to the Customer Service Standards and providing goods or services to persons with disabilities.
The School will keep records of the training provided, including dates on which training is provided and the number of individuals in attendance.
Notice of Temporary Disruptions
Service disruptions may occur for reasons that may or may not be within the control or knowledge of the School. In the event of any temporary disruptions to facilities that impact persons’ with disabilities’ usual access to goods, services, or facilities, reasonable efforts will be made to provide advance notice. In some circumstances, such as in the situation of unplanned temporary disruptions, advance notice may not be possible.
The School will provide public notice in the event of a planned or unexpected disruption to services for or facilities used by persons with disabilities. Such notices will include information about the reason for the disruption, how long the disruption is expected to last and a description of any alternative services or facilities, if available.
When disruptions occur, the School will provide notice by:
- Posting notices in conspicuous places, including at the point of disruption, at the main entrance, and the nearest accessible entrance to the service disruption, or on the School’s website; or
- By any other method that may be reasonable under the circumstances.
Such notice will be placed or available in a location that is appropriate based on the service disruption. For example, if the elevators are out of order, the School will ensure a notice is posted on or near the elevator doors.
In order to make information accessible, signs and printed notices of sufficient size that are easily readable will be prepared.
The signs and printed notices will be displayed prominently at the entrance to the School, on notice boards and at service desks.
Feedback Process
The School welcomes feedback, including feedback about the delivery of services to persons with disabilities. Users can submit feedback to the Principal. Alternatively, users can submit feedback to any member of the school administration, and it will be forwarded to the appropriate person.
Information about the feedback process will be readily available to all customers, and notice of the process will be made available on our external internet site: www.Crestwood.ca. Feedback information, along with alternate methods of providing feedback verbally (in person or by telephone) or written (handwritten, delivered, website, or e-mail), will be available upon request. November 5th, 2015About Lower School
October 14th, 2015Crestwood School, established in 1980, is a co-educational, non-denominational, private day school providing quality education to students in Junior Kindergarten through to Grade 6.
The school is located in the Bayview/Lawrence/Post Road area. The property, nestled in a picturesque wooded valley in the heart of the city, consists of several buildings spread over 3 1/2 acres of land.
Facilities include: smart boards in all classrooms; an art studio; two music rooms; a gymnasium; a library; a full-colour, state-of-the-art networked Macintosh computer lab, as well as a computer in every classroom starting in Kindergarten; two fully equipped playgrounds; and plenty of outdoor recreational space.
At Crestwood, we take a traditional approach to teaching. We challenge young minds to learn, and we structure experiences that make learning possible.
At the same time, we are concerned with the “whole child.” We strive to maintain a balance of a child’s physical, social, and emotional development.
We are committed to maintaining small class sizes, which allow for individual attention and the fostering of effective communication between students and teachers in a friendly, caring and nurturing environment.
Our expectations are high, and we firmly believe this produces higher achievement from our students.
We offer a structured program, stressing basic skills.
We meet students where they are at. If a student is excelling beyond the curriculum in a certain area, our faculty are trained to develop individualized programs to keep that student engaged. Conversely, if a student is struggling in one area, our teachers address those difficulties with them directly so that they do not become frustrated and disengaged.
Homework is considered an integral part of the students’ program, beginning in the early grades.
Organizational skills and the development of good work/study habits are stressed beginning in the early grades.
Crestwood strongly promotes cooperative attitudes and behaviour, and is committed to the preparation of self-confident, self-disciplined individuals who respect the feelings and rights of others.
Our teachers are the ‘secret sauce’ in our overall success. They form a strong rapport with each student, plan programs thoughtfully, and offer a through line of communication between home and school. Their commitment and dedication is what ensures that our ambitious goals are met.

Roll Into Summer
October 12th, 2012Over the past three years we have held “Swing Into Summer”, a golf tournament and silent auction event. The event was a great success and rose over $75, 000 for the Crestwood Preparatory College Bursary & Scholarship Foundation. The event brought together current students, parents, friends, alumni and supporters of Crestwood in a day of fun. Last year’s Newsletter can be found in the upcoming Weekly Newsletters.
Based on feedback from the community we wanted to offer an event that may bring even more of the community together and we are proud to announce that we are organizing “Roll into Summer”, a charity casino event. This year’s event will be held on Thursday, June 16th, 2016, at 7:00 p.m. at Montecassino Hotel & Events Centre. Once again the event will provide a great opportunity for all members of the Crestwood Community to socialize, enjoy some great food, a silent and live auction and support the Foundation and the Crestwood community.
We are hoping that everyone will be able to either join us at the event or assist us in a donation or sponsorship. Details regarding these possibilities are enclosed.
For more information about Roll Into Summer you can contact Dave Hecock, Lisa Newton, Phil Santomero or Peter Tanev by email at roll@crestwood.on.ca

Why Co-Ed?
August 10th, 2012Crestwood is one of the few private schools that offers a co-ed environment. We have made this decision because mixed gender education reflects the real world and the natural order of things. Our safe, nurturing environment helps students learn how to be themselves and remain true to themselves while relating to members of the opposite sex. Mutual respect, understanding and appreciation become a natural part of everyday life, and are to be expected both at Crestwood and well into their academic and professional careers.
Why Uniforms?
August 10th, 2012In a private school, school uniforms truly act as ‘the great equalizer’. They reduce label and style competitions and peer pressure that can undermine a student’s sense of belonging or fitting in and protect the sensitivities of students who can’t afford to keep up with the latest fashion trends. Students can focus more on learning versus who is wearing the latest fad.
Uniforms simplify. Most mornings, Crestwood students know exactly what they’ll be wearing to school. Parents tell us their children take three times longer to get ready for school on “grub days”, when they are allowed to wear their out-of-school clothing.
Facilities
August 10th, 2012Crestwood Preparatory College is situated on 7 acres of land. The school building is approximately 75,000 square feet and features:

-

Mentoring Systems
August 10th, 2012Crestwood offers a variety of mentoring opportunities for all students. Our three formal mentoring programs include the House Mentoring System, the Female Peer Mentorship Program and the Academic Mentorship Program. The House Mentor System offers some excellent opportunities to connect Senior and Junior students at the College by grouping all students with a teacher mentor. Several times throughout the year the mixed grade groups meet to participate in special activities and build the school community. The Female Peer Mentorship empowers girls and young women to believe in themselves and to help them reach their full potential by providing a mentoring relationship between younger and older students. Grade 11-12 female students are given a wonderful leadership opportunity while providing answers and reassurance to younger grade 7-8 female students. Our Academic Mentoring program helps students struggling with academic issues by pairing them off with a teacher and meeting on a regular basis.
The best mentoring occurs on an ad-hoc basis when a teacher approaches a student in need of extra support and encouragement or when a student seeks out a good word from someone that they respect. True mentorship is an ongoing conversation, and not the result of proscribed meetings, and are staff are trained to offer that mentorship whenever they feel it necessary. Our formal mentoring programs were put into place to assist students reluctant to approach anyone. These sessions merely provide opportunities for conversation, and do not have the same remedial impact or psychological benefit. As such, they are less productive. Parents whose children are shy and withdrawn are more likely to ask about mentoring programs.
As far as the benefits of mentoring as a whole are concerned, it addresses the necessary human connections that are absolutely imperative prerequisite for any academic success.

Crestwood uses technology as a catalyst for learning. Our academic community constantly strives to incorporate cutting edge technologies, such as our interactive Nelson “eLearning” books, SMARTboards and video editing labs. Our “Cloud” space allows teachers to continue a classroom conversation long after the classroom has emptied. These tools and philosophy create a learning environment that enhances the most important factor in any educational setting – the relationship between teacher and student.

Jillian Katz 2010
Jillian Katz graduated from Crestwood Preparatory College in 2010. Creative from a young age and always passionate about the arts, she continued on to study at OCAD University in Toronto. Initially an illustration major, Jillian quickly shifted her focus to graphic design. This enabled her to more deeply explore the possibilities within design: learning about both traditional and innovative design processes, theory and thinking. In June 2014, Jillian acquired her bachelor of design with a specialization in graphic design.
Throughout her post secondary education, Jillian held internships in advertising, branding, editorial, systems and interface design. Her involvement in such a range of spaces led her to realize a fascination with user experience, design research and strategy. Jillian is currently a member of the design team at Idea Couture, a global strategic innovation agency based out of Toronto. Here, she works with a broad spectrum of media and fortune 500 clients to conceptualize and produce meaningful, beautiful, forward-thinking experiences.
Matthew Fleischmann 2008
Matthew was born and raised in Toronto, where he grew up with his parents and two sisters. Matthew attended Crestwood from grades 7-12 and graduated in 2008, after which he moved to Halifax to attend Dalhousie University where he graduated in 2012 with a BA in Psychology and a minor in Law and Society. From there, Matthew attended Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, graduating in 2013 with an Honors Certificate in Psychology. After taking a year off to prepare for graduate school, he moved to Bristol, Rhode Island where he is currently completing a Masters in Forensic Psychology. Matthew hopes to pursue doctoral work in clinical psychology, with a forensic specialization. His goal is to teach at the university level, consult, and conduct research along with some counselling.
Matthew described how attending Crestwood was one of the best educational decisions he made, “My time spent there helped me to become a well-rounded student, shaped by the dedicated teachers, administrators, and friends I met along the way. Eight years later, I am still close friends with some of my classmates and keep in touch with teachers.” He believed that junior high and high school can be a place of learning, excitement, and uncertainty. “It is a time to grow, learn who you are, and foster your strengths while acknowledging areas that need improvement.”

Co-curricular
June 27th, 2012Crestwood is dedicated to providing students with a variety of opportunities to experience team and individual after school activities in both athletic and non-athletic areas. In the following pages will find a list of the many teams (our Varsity teams play in the CISAA ) and clubs your child can enjoy.
These programs contribute to success both outside and inside of the classroom, and are an integral part of student life. Experience has taught us that academic performance improves when a student participates in these programs on a regular basis. We will all do what we can to see that students engage in this very important part of a total high school experience.
Community Service
June 27th, 2012
“…it is your world and your future that are at stake. By volunteering, young people can take an active part in working towards a sustainable future.” – David Suzuki
All secondary school students in Ontario are required to contribute a minimum of 40 hours of community service work in order to graduate. Students are not given monetary compensation for their volunteer activities; rather, this time provides students with the opportunity to develop themselves as well-rounded individuals who actively contribute to the places where they live, work, and play. These opportunities allow students to make new friends, gain self confidence, network and explore prospective career options, and discover their strengths and talents, all while servicing the needs of their community. This community service shows students that the efforts of even a single individual can make a difference on the community at large, and both the students and the world they live in benefit as a result.
Acceptable activities may range from shoveling an elderly neighbour’s driveway, tutoring a younger student, volunteering for a political campaign, or helping to organize local community events. Students may also choose to volunteer their time at a local animal shelter, assist with literacy initiatives at the Toronto Public Library, or help in coaching a sports team at school.
Our hope is to instill a lifelong love of volunteering well above and beyond the required 40 hours. Aside from their professional successes, our graduates have gone on to make meaningful contributions to the world at large through their philanthropy, their community initiatives, and their work towards improving quality of life both here and abroad. We could not be prouder of their continued commitment to service.
Student Services
June 27th, 2012Maximizing Academic Performance Program (M.A.P Program)
At Crestwood Preparatory College we understand that every student learns differently, and we have worked to normalize students requiring additional support to reach their full potential. We have built our Maximizing Academic Performance Program with a view towards normalizing that additional support, both as part of in-class learning and through supplemental initiatives. This allows us to gauge how each student learns, and provide them with the tools necessary and unique for them to reach their full potential in their secondary and post-secondary education.
There are several components involved in the MAP Program;
- Grade 7, 8 and 9 MAP Centres: daily after school homework and academic centres in which teachers assist students in homework, organizational and study related areas.
- Grade 7 “Integrated Study Skills” Course – part of the regular program and schedule for all grade 7 students.
- Math Tutoring Centre – teacher and peer assistance for all grade levels.
- English Writing Centre- opportunities for students with writing challenges or inquiries to get assistance from English teachers.
- Reach Ahead Credits – Grade 7 & 8 students have the opportunity to reach ahead in subjects such as Geography, Computers, Mathematics and French allowing them to earn up to 4 high school credits prior to the start of Grade 9.
- Mentoring Programs- regularly scheduled meetings with teachers and mentor groups- more individualized program for students with greater need.
- Optional GLS/GLE Study Skills Course in Grade 9.
The Crestwood Preparatory College MAP Program, your road to success at high school and beyond.
The ROOTS Program
Crestwood’s ROOTS Program provides a smaller class setting for students from grades 3 through 8 who benefit from a more intensive, support-based learning environment. While following the Ministry of Education guidelines mandated for each grade level, ROOTS is differentiated by pace and volume.
The goal of the program is to foster a positive work ethic and provide a learning community that challenges all students to realize their greatest potential. Ultimately, this will provide students with the skills necessary for eventual integration into the mainstream classroom. The program focuses on providing students with a foundation in basic skills through a structured environment, with an intensive process-based approach to learning. ROOTS addresses the academic, social and emotional needs of children with a variety of ability levels and learning styles. Differentiated instruction and individualized student support is based on the needs of each student. We actively involve parents and the community in supporting student learning and development. It provides the student with the tools and skill set necessary for success in the 21st Century.
Guidance
Crestwood is proud to provide a full range of guidance services to its students as an essential part of the school’s academic mandate. Students are expected to visit their counsellor regularly. Counsellors will also visit classrooms to instruct students in areas related to career planning, time management and study skills.
Parents may make appointments to discuss their child’s academic performance, subject selection or career choices with the guidance teachers. University and college academic calendars are readily available and important sources of information. University/college officials will be invited to speak to students about post-secondary programs and career opportunities.

Message From The Head of Upper School
June 27th, 2012
On behalf of everyone at Crestwood Preparatory College, I would like to extend a warm welcome and thank you for taking the time to research our school.
At Crestwood, we believe in creating a school culture where our students and parents know us and, most importantly, trust us. Our teachers know their students well and encourage each of them to aspire to reach their full potential. We know that learning can be challenging and frustrating, but also full of personal rewards. The positive relationships we build with our students are vital to creating an environment where the students are willing to take risks. Even if they do not find success initially, they will be comfortable enough to persevere until they can achieve their goals. Ultimately the personal ownership of their success will lay the foundation of future endeavors beyond their time at Crestwood.
We are very proud of our school and especially our outstanding students. Please visit us anytime, experience the community yourself, and see how we strive to inspire excellence and nurture individuality.

June 27th, 2012House System
June 27th, 2012Crestwood’s House system fosters a sense of camaraderie, encourages healthy competition, and develops school spirit. There are six houses (teams) named appropriately after trees indigenous to the school’s location (e.g., Maple House, Oak House, etc.). With the guidance of staff advisors, a Grade 6 House Head and a Grade 5 Assistant (both elected) lead each House.
Crestwood assigns each new student to a House when they first arrive, and they remain with that house throughout their years here. This fosters a sense of camaraderie and loyalty between the youngest Kindergarten students and the older students, who have the responsibility of serving as
Each House accumulates points throughout the year based on student participation in all aspects of student life—not just in the area of athletics. The House that accumulates the most points by the end of the year receives the prestigious Laidlaw Cup in a school-wide awards assembly. Members of the victorious House each receive an individual trophy to take home.

Crestwood Goes Green
June 27th, 2012Crestwood School is a Gold Certified Eco School. Through the Ontario Eco Schools program students learn the importance of energy conservation, waste diversion, gardening and biodiversity. The school community works together to perform energy and waste audits, greening projects and composting.
Crestwood School has a dedicated Eco Team made up of over 74 members between Grades 3 and 6. These students meet every Monday to discuss ways to “green” our school, go on environmentally-focused field trips, work towards educating our community. The Eco Team has implemented several campaigns including No Idling, Battery and Cell Phone recycling receptacles and Litterless Lunch.
As a community, we work together to improve the school’s naturally beautiful environment. All students are required to pack a litterless lunch using reusable containers, cloth napkins and metal cutlery. Lunch waste is taken back home as part of our Boomerang Lunch program. Food waste is composted and added to our Learning Garden. Students and parents assist in the maintenance of our garden. Parents are asked to turn off car engines when stopped for more than 10 seconds. Plastic water bottles are a thing of the past at Crestwood as we have installed filtered tankless water systems thanks to the efforts of our Parents’ Association.
At Crestwood School we are proud of our green initiatives and aim to educate our community on ways of protecting our environment. We all believe it’s easy being green!
Resource Support
June 27th, 2012The ROOTS Program at Crestwood
Crestwood’s ROOTS Program provides a smaller class setting for students who benefit from a more intensive support based learning environment. While following the Ministry of Education guidelines mandated for each grade level, ROOTS is differentiated by pace and volume. This program is available to students with learning difficulties from Grades 3-8.
Resource Program
The Resource program at Crestwood School provides students with the opportunity for additional teacher support alongside the curriculum content taught in the classroom. Curriculum is reviewed and presented in a step-by-step manner within a small group setting to support students in meeting curriculum expectations. This unique forum allows students additional time with a teacher and enhances academic success. The program also promotes independent application of the skills and strategies taught, which are acquired and reinforced through the small group presentation of the curriculum material.
Crestwood School offers students support across a number of curricular areas…Students who are struggling in decoding/reading skills are provided with assistance by the Reading Strategies support teacher who uses a developmentally-appropriate reading approach that addresses students with diverse learning needs. Reading fluency and decoding strategies are applied in a systematic way that builds over time. This systematic approach serves as the foundational program for students having difficulties acquiring basic decoding and blending/fluency skills.
The intervention consists of teaching students basic phonemic skills. The Reading Strategy support provides students with the skills to become more successful readers, writers, and spellers and thus become more confident and creative in their approach and application in terms of reading and writing. Using a small group approach, our students demonstrate improved/ higher levels of self esteem and risk taking behaviours across all subject areas due to their improved level of reading and writing.
The Resource teacher focuses on reading comprehension and written language strategies, which are also taught within the context of the program and applied throughout the curriculum. Students are supported in terms of concepts and skills, taught efficient, appropriate strategies, encouraged to develop and demonstrate a greater in depth understanding in terms of performance and achievement. The students are encouraged to use critical thinking skills to solve problems and make decisions.
The Resource teacher and Reading Strategy teacher convenes frequently with teachers, therapists, administrators and parents for the purpose of shared communication while advocating for the student. Students work through the application of the learning objectives introduced in class. Individual needs are met by providing students with additional reinforcement to enhance student application and the understanding of concepts and skills. Short and long term goals/action plans are set including accommodations and modifications to the curriculum. Teachers communicate on a regular basis to review student progress and to identify the types of support required. Differential instructional learning strategies, individualized learning plans and adaptations to address varied learning needs are implemented/put in place to meet the needs of students’ individual abilities and to support them in meeting the expectations of the curriculum.

Athletics
June 27th, 2012At Crestwood, our Physical Education program strives to encourage students in all the areas that make up a healthy individual both mentally and physically. Through various individual and group activities, our students are exposed to a variety of learning situations, such as problem solving, cooperation, fitness, skill development and competition .
The curriculum includes a compulsory physical education program for all students beginning in Junior Kindergarten. In addition, intramural and extramural team sports are offered as an option to all students beginning in Grade 4. We offer intramural sports such as soccer, beachball volleyball, basketball, broomball, floor hockey and baseball, all of which are scheduled during the lunch hour.
Team sports afford the students the opportunity to gain experience in a particular sport as well as develop the skills of cooperation and competition. Extramural teams compete against other schools in cross-country running, floor hockey, ice hockey, soccer, basketball, softball, volleyball, and badminton.
Most importantly, we encourage our students to have “organized fun” and develop to the best of their ability.
Theatre Arts
June 27th, 2012Theatre Arts is an integral part of the curriculum at Crestwood School. We believe that communication through self-expression is essential to the creative development of each student, and that theatre unlocks bravery and creativity in ways that other pursuits cannot. Through classroom exercises, students are encouraged to explore their own dramatic abilities and to interact with others in group situations. Emphasis is placed not only upon creativity and spontaneity, but upon discipline and responsibility in performing.
One of the highlights of each year at Crestwood is the production of a major musical. All students in grades 4-6 are encouraged to participate in the play in some capacity and to share in the learning experience. Musicals that Crestwood students have performed include: The Wizard of Oz, Annie, Oliver, My Fair Lady, Grease, Les Miserables, The Lion King, The Prince and The Pauper, Bye Bye Birdie, and Fiddler on the Roof. Each new play has brought with it a new challenge, and each year, through the devotion, hard work, and talent of the students and staff have resulted in superior quality productions.

Music
June 27th, 2012JK – Grade 3
Music at Crestwood School emphasizes learning through the joy of music-making. Young children are natural musicians, and Kindergarten and Primary music classes enable the children to express themselves through singing, playing instruments, musical games, dancing and dramatic musical play. Musical concepts are first introduced, preparing the children for music literacy at the Junior level. Theory and reading of music, music history and listening skills are developed progressively.
Grade 4
In the Junior division, students enjoy a full instrumental music program, beginning with recorders in Grade 4. By December, students are able to read music and to play a wide variety of songs. The first term finishes with a Holiday Concert at the Toronto Centre for the Arts. Throughout the remainder of the year, students continue to expand their repertoire on the recorder, listen to music and learn about the instruments of the orchestra. The school year ends with a performance in Crestwood’s Spring Concert.
Grades 5-6
Students begin learning to play band instruments. With the help of the music teacher, they each choose a suitable band instrument to play for two years. Throughout the year, students learn to play music in a variety of styles, developing their technique, reading and ensemble skills. Each grade forms a band and performs in the Holiday and Spring Concerts.
Choirs
Crestwood also features a Primary Choir (Grades 1-3) and a Junior Choir (Grades 4-6) as extra-curricular activities for students who wish to enrich their music experience with choral singing. The choirs perform in the annual Holiday and Spring Concerts at the Toronto Centre for the Arts. The Junior Choir also gives community service concerts and takes part in various annual festivals such as the Ontario Vocal Festival, MusicFest Canada and the Conference of Independent School’s Music Festival at Roy Thompson Hall.

Faculty
June 27th, 2012A school is only as good as its teachers and Crestwood’s excellent reputation is a direct result of its superior staff. They are the primary reason for our students’ success.
The staff at Crestwood consists of professionals who are committed to enriching the learning experiences of their students. Teachers are carefully selected not only for their academic qualifications and experience, but as importantly for their dynamic abilities to relate to each individual student in a patient, sensitive and understanding manner.
Our teachers bring a wealth of diverse experience and knowledge, feel passionate about what they do, are determined to help students achieve to their potential. Teaching practices always involve accommodating the different learning styles of each child, and our teachers contribute far beyond the in-class instruction. They teach, coach, moderate activities, skillfully supervise in formal and informal settings and advise young people always in need of positive and encouraging adult role models
Message from the Head of Lower School
June 27th, 2012Parents who want their children to receive a “good education” must focus on laying the groundwork for the fundamentals that will help children excel scholastically in the years ahead. Naturally, children should be competent in the 3R’s (reading, writing, and arithmetic), but the basis for a lifetime of learning begins in these earliest years.
One of the most important goals of education is to teach children how to learn. Children must be able to think critically in order to evaluate what they see, hear, and read. This is a skill which is paramount, not only to structured education, but to life in general. Children must also develop the necessary traits of a healthy personality. Self-assurance, self-respect, trust in others, and respect for others are also critical to any future success.
Next, we want the children to work well with others. Sharing with others, understanding the needs of others, and assuming responsibility for the well-being of others are important qualities one must have in our world today.
Finally, we want the children to work creatively in order to fully express themselves as the unique individuals they are.
I feel that when children are provided with a stimulating and nurturing environment, it results in a positive attitude to education and to those around them.
At Crestwood, our goal is to provide students with sound academic skills, while at the same time providing them with the framework from which they can develop the necessary lifelong skills which I feel encompass a “good education.”

History
June 27th, 2012“I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for providing such a warm, nurturing and successful learning environment. Not only did our sons receive an excellent education, but they were happy at school as well. They also learned what it’s like to have wonderful teachers and to be surrounded by a caring school community.” —Jenny Gold
In 1979, after ten years of teaching in public and private schools, Dalia Eisen decided to start her own school. “I knew I could do better and offer students more than existing schools would let me,” she explains. “Children needed a school that could address their diverse needs through differentiated teaching. I also wanted to stick to the tried and true methods of teaching the basics (phonics, grammar, spelling, etc.) because public schools were moving away from these, and it didn’t feel right to me.”
So, in September 1980, Crestwood opened its doors with seven students in 800 square feet of office space at Eglinton and Bathurst. “I considered building slowly and waiting until I had enough students, but in the end, I just went for it.”
Five years later, Crestwood and its 70 students moved into a Victorian house on Prince Arthur Avenue. In 1990, ten short years after starting, Crestwood had 360 students (Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6) and moved to its current location at Bayview and Lawrence.
People loved the school. Teachers took the time to get to know their students and really figure out what each individual needed in order to excel. Students felt confident about learning and couldn’t wait to get to school. Parents admired Crestwood’s ability to balance innovative and traditional teaching methods and provide an environment that provided safety and a sense of adventure at the same time. These qualities have not changed over the years.
Parents clamored for an upper school, and Dalia finally said yes. In the spring of 2001, Vince Pagano agreed to become Headmaster of Crestwood Preparatory College (Grades 7 to 12) and help Dalia get it started. He oversaw the physical expansion of the newly acquired building less than ten minutes away near York Mills and the Don Valley Parkway and helped get everything else into place in time to begin its inaugural year that September. Crestwood Preparatory College now has 550 students.
Meet The Leadership
June 27th, 2012Welcome To Crestwood
June 27th, 2012
Dear Parents:
Welcome to Crestwood ! We are delighted that your search for the right school has brought you to our website. Few decisions you make regarding your child’s future will have such far-reaching effects as choosing where to attend school.
Crestwood, a member of the Conference of Independent Schools, provides a vibrant educational environment that fosters a passion for learning. We are committed to providing an excellent education that meets students’ interests, abilities and needs as well as inviting and encouraging work and participation in activities and areas previously overlooked. Not only do we challenge each student to develop intellectually, creatively, socially and emotionally, but just as important, we cultivate values of respect, integrity, diligence and compassion. We view these as crucial factors in the personal growth of children and in their ability to embrace good citizenship and community responsibility.
While navigating through our website, we’ll provide an introduction to who we are and what we do. We encourage parents and students to visit the school, tour our facilities, meet the faculty, and by doing so, get a real sense of the “pulse” of the Crestwood community. We are very proud of our educational programs, our faculty and our students.
Please accept our personal invitation to call and make an appointment for a meeting or a tour. You may also wish to attend one of our Open Houses scheduled throughout the year.

Advanced Placement
June 27th, 2012
Students may take an AP course in conjunction with their regular high school courses and commit additional time to the necessary AP workload. Students also write their AP exam at an earlier date in May, and regular exams are in June. In July, these results are reported to the candidates, Crestwood and designated universities. Although these results do not affect admission to university, once registered, many universities in Canada, and most in the United States, grant transfer credits based on successful AP results. Students wishing to take an AP course MUST register with the subject teacher of the prerequisite course before commencing an AP course at Crestwood.
Grade 11/12 AP courses are offered at Crestwood Preparatory College in the following subjects:
- Physics
- Computer Science
- French
- Spanish
- Biology
- English Language
- American History – Grade 11
- World History
- Visual Arts
- English Literature
- Chemistry
- Economics
NOTE: Students must have the recommendation of the teacher of the previously completed prerequisite course in order to register for an AP course.
Visual Arts
June 27th, 2012Crestwood structures its art program to let students grow in their artistic abilities while learning to express themselves. We learn concepts by experimenting, using different materials and techniques such as pencil, ink, pastel, paint and clay. Through creating art, in any media, children learn to accept themselves as individuals and to accept the differences in others, as no two products in art are ever identical. Our goal is that, through art, children learn to think and imagine, learn to express their thoughts and moods in their creations and learn to see, not just to look.
Junior (Grades 4 to 6)
June 27th, 2012Children in the Junior Division are entering the important transition years between childhood and preadolescence. Academically, they are consolidating skills acquired at the primary level, while at the same time learning and developing new academic skills and concepts that will prepare them for what lies ahead in junior high/high school.
The program closely follows the Ministry of Education guidelines. In addition to the core subjects of reading, writing and arithmetic, the curriculum also includes: science, social studies, French, art, drama, music, and physical education. A strong emphasis is placed upon organizational skills, research skills, and the development of good work/study habits. Computers are used as an educational resource, and special events, field trips, and extra-curricular activities round out the program. The structured program and small class sizes ensure that every student receives the attention that they need and deserve.
Primary (Grades 1 to 3)
June 27th, 2012As in the Pre-Primary Division, the experiences children have in the early primary years continue to mould their attitudes towards learning by providing basic skills and instilling a drive for acquiring knowledge.
The program in the primary grades combines a creative and stimulating, yet structured and disciplined environment, allowing students to grow and develop at their own pace. We strive to provide students with successful experiences which are intended to bolster their self-confidence and self-esteem, and to motivate them to achieve to the best of their abilities.
The curriculum closely follows the Ministry of Education guidelines, and stresses the educational basics, building strong foundations in reading, writing, and arithmetic. Using a variety of resources and approaches, the curriculum also includes environmental studies, art, drama, music, physical education and French. In all subject areas there is a strong emphasis on creating practical and hands-on activities which enhance the theoretical aspects of the subject. Computers are used as an educational resource, and special events, field trips, and extra-curricular activities round out the program.
The limiting of class size to a maximum of 18 students allows for recognition of each student’s unique abilities.
Jr. and Sr. Kindergarten
June 27th, 2012Junior and Senior Kindergarten are often a child’s first introduction to “formal education.” Therefore, they are the foundation upon which attitudes towards all subsequent education are built.
We believe that within the mind of every child lies the potential for greatness. Finding the keys to unleashing those abilities is one of our fundamental goals. It is thus imperative to provide a program which fosters a sense of enthusiasm towards learning, as well as one which facilitates the development of each individual to his/her fullest potential.
Because each child is unique, we recognize that they learn at their own pace and in their own way. Every child’s style of learning is identified through close observation, attention to the child’s needs, and most importantly, individual time with the teacher.
With supportive guidance, the children are encouraged to experiment, explore, create and problem solve as they play. All activities are designed to intrigue and excite the early learners and allow them to question, investigate and reach conclusions.
Our early learning curriculum involves mathematics, reading, written and oral expression, environmental studies and an introduction to French. It also includes activities that develop social, physical, and creative skills.
The classroom environment is positive and stimulating, and whether the children are learning to count, read or paint a “masterpiece,” they recognize that learning is fun! The children soon develop a sense of confidence in their abilities and are ready to take on new challenges. They learn to make decisions and to accept responsibilities.
We set the groundwork by helping children build an eagerness to learn and grow in all areas. Our kindergarten graduates are successfully prepared to take the next step in their education.

June 27th, 2012We believe that:
“You have a tremendous program that has given each of our three children the necessary tools to achieve success in their own way. They now have the confidence to strive for more success across a range of disciplines whether it be in academics, music, sports or drama.” —Scott Northey
- A quality education develops intellectual, emotional, physical and social skills in order to produce life-long learners who are happy, successful, responsible and contributing members of society
- A positive attitude towards learning and safe social interaction are essential ingredients for academic accomplishment and healthy personal development
- We must foster a love of learning and emphasize the importance of doing one’s best
- Teaching to the individual needs of each child is essential because children learn at different rates and at different levels that have nothing to do with intelligence or prospects
- All children are special and talented and should be challenged to achieve their maximum potential
- High expectations produce higher achievement
- We must help students develop responsibility for their behaviour and academic growth
- Everyone deserves to be treated with patience, consistency, fairness, dignity and respect
- Healthy, civil relationships are an important precondition to virtually all meaningful interactions
- Regular parental support and involvement are essential for success
- Teachers, students and parents need to be aware of and share realistic goals
Mission and Objectives
June 27th, 2012
The Crestwood Mission:
Crestwood encourages students to achieve their highest potential, balancing academic, physical, and social pursuits within an enriched, structured, and disciplined environment. We are committed to academic excellence while fostering integrity, creativity, and responsibility to self and community. We educate adolescents to develop positive personal relationships, embrace differences of appearance and opinion, underline daily the importance of civility and the sensitivities required to achieve it and grasp the necessity of diligence in realizing one’s goals. Students will have guidance, nurturing, and adult role models to inspire daily work and efforts.
Objectives:
- Help children become excited learners, critical thinkers and problem-solvers
- Provide a safe, caring, nurturing environment that promotes self-esteem, creative thinking, love of learning and respect for self and others
- Allow for further opportunity by maximizing university entrance prospects
- Provide learning opportunities that respond to the different learning styles of our students
- Recognize and acknowledge the strengths of each and every student
- Build ability through confidence
- Teach and counsel young people on positive relationships and the importance of respect for differences of all kinds
- Help students develop a sense of community and understand the importance of community service and giving back
- Maintain an extensive co-curricular program to assist in the development of the all-round person
- Offer a range of activities that are athletic and arts-based
- Suggest extracurricular activities that offer individual students opportunities to shine, support their interests or open new avenues of inspiration
- Recommend literature to enhance the individual interests and facilitate a love of reading
“Crestwood changed my daughter from an apathetic B student to a solid A student who is now an academically and socially engaged young woman. She is excited and confident about her future and the things she will achieve.” —T. Van Andel
About
May 27th, 2012Crestwood students and alumni approach life with confidence and a sense of adventure. Opportunities and success abound in an atmosphere dedicated to effective teachers and teaching practices, a safe, disciplined and nurturing environment, and a superbly enriched academic and co-curricular program.
Teachers invite and encourage student participation at all levels, communicate with parents regularly, and assist in remedying any issue with a positive and professional attitude.
Our academic program is process oriented. Learning skills, study habits, time management and organizational keys are always front and centre in every classroom and lesson. Students are encouraged to do their best and to get involved in the daily life of the school. Critical, independent thinking and analysis is always encouraged. The confidence and self-esteem programs of this nature engender the positive personal relationships students form in and out of school.
